Manfred Neun (born August 21, 1950 in Heidenheim an der Brenz ) is a German entrepreneur and former President of the European Cyclists' Federation (ECF).

Life and work

Manfred Neun grew up in Heidenheim, where his parents ran a gardening business. He did an apprenticeship in banking and took care of the finances of his parents' company. He then led the medium-sized family business for bicycle manufacturing Epple Zweirad GmbH in Memmingen for 22 years .

In the 1970s, Neun studied business psychology at the University of Augsburg . After completing his studies, he researched economic psychological aspects related to private and public transport in urban environments. He worked as a lecturer at four different universities. He later became a partner in a company in Memmingen that specializes in advising medium-sized companies.

Nine was president of the Zweirad Groß- und Außenhandelsverband (ZGA), board member of the domestic Chamber of Commerce and Industry and member of the general assembly of the Swabian Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

President of the ECF

From 2005 to December 2018 Manfred Neun was President of the European Cyclists' Federation . In December 2018 he received the honorary president of the ECF in recognition of his accomplishments as past president. He is also a member of the discussion group The Transformers - Actors of the Great Transformation .

During his presidency, the Berne Declaration on Climate Protection and the Charter of Brussels on the development of cycling in cities were created.

As President of the ECF , Neun attached great importance to the scientific approach of Velo-city conferences of the ECF and to the representation of interests for cycling and cycling in general. It went back to his initiative that scientists were included in the bicycle network, for example at the Velo-city conference in Copenhagen in 2010 , at which scientists, politicians, experts and bicycle propagandists came together to work together. He himself describes his approach as the sum of his experience as an entrepreneur in the bicycle industry, his academic background and his experience in non-governmental organizations .

On May 23, 2014, Neun wrote in a guest column in the “ Newsletter ” of the Evangelical Academy Tutzing : “We can and must present new thinking models about cycling in order to be part of the academic and political discourse”. In the article he points to the worldwide growing bicycle expertise for generating sustainable development. It is no longer a question of “what could be done politically for cycling, but what cycling can do to solve political problems in the main areas of mobility in the context of urban and transport planning, ecology and climate change, health, economy, and energy and resources could contribute. [...] Active mobility is vital for cities. It makes them safer, healthier, more livable and lovable. Promoting this quality of life means making cities for people - and not for cars, ”said Neun. In particular, more bicycle traffic provides significant solutions on the way to a post-fossil society and early, more global distributive justice.
