European Cyclists 'Federation ( ECF for short , German  European Cyclists' Association ) is the umbrella organization of European cycling organizations based in Brussels. The ECF is a non-governmental organization under Belgian law and was founded in 1983 by initially 12 European cycling organizations.

Mission statement

At the annual meeting in Trondheim, the ECF decided on a model for its work, which states, among other things: The European Cyclists Association (ECF) will do everything in its power to use the bicycle as far as possible with the aim of sustainable mobility and the Promote well-being of the population. To achieve this goal, the association is trying to change attitudes, policies and budget allocation at European level.

The association currently consists of 56 organizations from 38 countries. From the German-speaking area these are the German ADFC , HPV Deutschland e. V. , the Austrian ARGUS bicycle office and the bicycle interest group (now together as Radlobby Österreich ), the Swiss Transport Club and Pro Velo Switzerland . The General Assembly, which takes place once a year at different locations, is the highest body of the ECF and elects the Management Committee , the board of the association. Christophe Najdovski has been President of the ECF since May 2018.

Goals and Activities

The purpose is to network the activities of the member organizations at local, regional and national level within a European framework. In addition, he sees his task in creating a favorable climate for bicycle traffic in transport, environmental and tourism policy. This should be achieved through a dense network between the bicycle groups and politics, industry, media, planners, railway companies and tourism. The contacts to the EU Parliament , the EU Commission , the European Conference of Transport Ministers and the UN Economic Commission for Europe are particularly mentioned .

In addition, the organization offers support in traffic route planning, the creation of bicycle facilities such as parking facilities or parking garages as well as the development of intermodality (the effective use of different means of transport). An important activity of the ECF is the development and promotion of a European cycle route network EuroVelo . In addition, the ECF organizes an annual Velo-city conference - sometimes at two locations, such as in Graz in 1999 and Maribor, 70 km away .
