Manfred Schmid (artist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Schmid (* 1958 in Bremen ) is a German artist and craftsman who is mainly known for his work with urushi lacquer.

Career

Schmid grew up in Bremen and initially trained as a cabinet maker . He was self-employed in this profession for ten years when he decided to study Japanese lacquer in Barcelona . From 1998 to 2004 he laid the foundation stone for his current profession at Escola Massana and Escola Llotja.

Manfred Schmid is one of the few artists in Germany who work with urushi today. He combines the highly complex traditional Japanese techniques of lacquer art with contemporary European design. The objects that leave his studio are unique pieces that have matured over several months or years to fully bring out the special gloss of the black lacquer.

Schmid has been living and working again in his native Bremen since 2004. From here he developed his work and participated in numerous national and international exhibitions in Germany, Spain, Japan and the USA.
