Manfred Weiss (lawyer)

Manfred Weiss (born June 1, 1940 in Tuttlingen ) is a German legal scholar .

Life

Weiss studied law at the universities of Berlin and Freiburg from 1960 to 1964 . In 1965/1966 he was a research fellow at the Center for the Study of Law and Society in Berkeley . He received his PhD in 1971 on the theory of judicial decision-making in the United States. He then worked as a research assistant until 1972 and then as a lecturer at the University of Frankfurt am Main . After being appointed to the chair for labor and civil law at the University of Hamburg in 1974, Weiss returned to Frankfurt in 1977 and took over the chair for civil law and labor law, which he held until his retirement on October 1, 2008.

Manfred Weiss maintained numerous contacts abroad as part of his academic work, particularly to South Africa , where he is Honorary Professor at the University of Cape Town and Associate Professor at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Western Cape. Long-term visiting professorships have taken him to universities in France, Belgium, the United States and still to South Africa. Weiss is and was a faculty member of several annual international seminars (Szeged / Hungary, Bordeaux / France, Bologna / Italy, Vilnius / Lithuania and Venice / Italy).

Weiss was a member of the permanent deputation of the German Lawyers' Association (DJT) from 1990 to 2002 and its vice-president from 1998 to 2002. From 1990 to 1995 he was President of the German Industrial Relations Association (GIRA). From 1989 to 1995 and from 2000 to 2006 he was a member of the Executive Committee of the International Industrial Relations Association (IIRA) and from 2000 to 2003 the president of this association.

Weiss is or was co-editor of several, mainly labor law magazines as well as the critical quarterly journal for legislation and jurisprudence (KritV).

Manfred Weiss is a member of the International Labor and Employment Association (ILERA) and the International Society of Labor Law and Social Security (ISLLSS). In February 2012 he was accepted as a Fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science. In 2015 he received the International Labor Law Network's award for outstanding services to labor law.

In 1992 Weiss was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon and, in 2002, the Federal Cross of Merit, 1st class. He holds honorary doctorates from the universities of Budapest (2005), Lima (2006), Bordeaux (2001) and Nort West / South Africa (2015)
