Manfred Wimmer (Go player)
Manfred Wimmer (* 1944 in Carinthia ; † 1995 in Vienna ) was an Austrian Go player.
As early as the 1960s, he was by far the strongest Go player in Austria and one of the strongest non-Asian players worldwide. He studied mathematics, but dropped out in the early 1970s to train as a go professional in Japan . In January 1978 he was the first non-Asian Go player to receive a Japanese professional diploma and, after beating Tono Hiroaki , he was appointed 1st Dan . In November of the same year the 2nd Dan was awarded. He left Japan and returned to Austria.
In 1969 and 1974 he was European Go Champion and runner-up in 1966, 1967, 1970 and 1975. Shortly before his death, he achieved third place at the 1994 European Championships.
