Manggar (Chinese: 芒 加尔) is a subdistrict on the island of Belitung ( Dutch Billiton) in the Bangka-Belitung Province in Indonesia . It is the capital of the Eastern Belitung District .
history
In the 1860s, Dutch prospectors from Billiton Maatschappij explored the area and established the Burung Mandi Lenggang mining district. A tin mine was built on the right bank of the Manggar River in 1863 , and the district was renamed Manggar District in 1866. Manggar was opened to the immigration of foreign Orientals on October 8, 1871, which is considered to be the founding date of the district.
In late 1945, during the early stages of the Indonesian National Revolution, the Dutch authorities reoccupied the city, despite some resistance from the newly formed Indonesian armed forces . After Indonesian independence, the Manggar subdistrict was one of the four subdistricts that comprised Belitung Island in the 1980s. Manggar became the seat of the East Belitung Administration after its establishment in 2003.

In Manggar there are 37,700 people in 12,470 households. This makes it the most populous subdistrict in East Belitung and the second most populous on the island after Tanjung Pandan . The gender ratio is 104.5 men to 100 women.
