The Manji Line ( Japanese 万 字 線 , Manji-sen ) was a railway line in the center of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It was in operation from 1914 to 1985.

The 23.8 km long Manji Line was Cape gauge , single-track and not electrified. It branched off the Muroran main line at Shibun Station and ran from there through the Horomui Valley to Manji-tanzan. All passenger trains did not start in Shibun, but in Iwamizawa station , a major transport hub.

history

There were significant hard coal deposits southeast of the city of Iwamizawa . In order for mines to be operated profitably there, the development by rail was necessary. The Railway Authority (later the Ministry of Railways ) opened the Manji Kleinbahn ( 万 字 軽 便 線 , Manji-keibensen ) on November 11, 1914 . The last 1.5 km from Manji to the Manji-tanzan mining station were initially reserved for freight traffic, while passenger trains only ran to Manji. On November 2, 1922, the name was changed to Manji Line, and on September 1, 1924, passenger traffic between Manji and Manji-tanzan was taken up.

For decades, the mines ensured brisk freight traffic. In addition to the regular passenger trains, special trains for winter sports enthusiasts run from Sapporo to Kami-Shibun, where the Haginoyama ski area is located. In the 1960s, the demand for coal began to decline significantly. After the closure of the last mine, the Japanese State Railways stopped freight traffic on May 1, 1978. Eventually the entire Manji Line was shut down on April 1, 1985; the passenger traffic then took over a bus line of the company Hokkaidō Chūō Bus .
