Mank's carousel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Mank carousel or Mank carousel is an apparatus used to determine the effect of air pollution on materials. The sampling period can extend up to six months. The Mank carousel was named after its inventor.

Structure and use

A Mank's carousel essentially consists of a five-armed star that is easily rotatable and fitted into a pivot bearing made up of a brass bush and a steel ball . The sample plates are mounted on the arms of the star so that the apparatus resembles a wind turbine. The Mank carousel is set up in such a way that a free flow is guaranteed. The drive is carried out randomly by the air flow, so that the direction of exposure is constantly changed and the material samples are evenly exposed.

After a certain exposure period, which for steel is usually between 14 and 30 days and for Stein it can be half a year, the material samples are analyzed in the laboratory and compared with unexposed material samples. In addition to steel and stone, the Mank carousel is also used to examine the effects of air pollution on glass.

If an impact cadastre - a supplementary information system to the emissions and immission cadastre - is to be created, it makes sense to collect IRMA data at the same measuring location at the same time. In contrast to the IRMA data, the data obtained with the Mank carousel are component-unspecific.
