Mannheim roller

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mannheimer roller is a musical effect that was developed and used by the Mannheim school in the 18th century . It consists of an extended crescendo passage with diatonic or ascending sequencing in triad steps over an ostinate bass line . The roller is suitable for opening a plant. This includes a short topic that is repeated in ascending order. The first theme is played piano, then this leads to an explosive outburst.

The roller is one of the so-called Mannheim manners , a term that, like the names of most of the individual effects , was coined by Hugo Riemann in the 19th century .
