Aerial photographs of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions (ANARE) from 1956 and 1960 were used for mapping. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia named it after John Manning (* 1937), who led ANARE teams several times between 1969 and 1974 to survey the Prince Charles Mountains .
