The Mawson Escarpment is a flattened and 112 km long step in the east Antarctic Mac Robertson Land . The west-facing formation extends north-south along the eastern flank of the Lambert Glacier . At its northern tip is the Barkell platform .

John Michael Seaton, flight officer of the Royal Australian Air Force , discovered them on a reconnaissance flight as part of the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions in 1956. The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia (ANCA) named them after the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson (1882-1958) .
