Manning Island is a large island in Prydz Bay on the Ingrid Christensen Coast of Princess Elisabeth Land in East Antarctica . It is located 1.9 km north of the Broknes peninsula in the Larsemann Hills area .
Norwegian cartographers mapped it in 1946 using aerial photographs of the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 and named it Vikøy ( Norwegian for bay island ). The Antarctic Names Committee of Australia , on the other hand, named them after John Manning (* 1937), who between 1969 and 1974 led ANARE teams to survey the Prince Charles Mountains several times .
