The Mantra Rock Dance was a rock concert that took place on January 29, 1967 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco . The concert was an early event of Hippie - Counterculture in the Summer of Love .

The concert was organized by supporters of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness ( International Society for Krishna Consciousness , ISKCON), so that their founder AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada could turn to a larger audience. Another goal was to raise funds for the first center of the movement on the west coast of the United States .

The mantra rock dance performed some of the most famous rock bands of their time, including the Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin , as well as the until then relatively unknown group Moby Grape . The bands performed for free; the proceeds from the concert went to the local Hare Krishna temple. The participation of leading figures of the counterculture, such as the poet Allen Ginsberg and the LSD advocates Timothy Leary and Owsley Stanley also contributed to the success of the concert .
