Manuel Caetano de Sousa (architect)
Manuel Caetano de Sousa (* 25. January 1742 in Mafra , † May 1802 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese architect of the Baroque .
Career
He was the son and student of the builder Caetano Tomás de Sousa . After the death of Mateus Vicente de Oliveira , he was appointed court architect and director of the Casa do Infantado .
After the Lisbon earthquake in 1755, Sousa was responsible for the construction and reconstruction of numerous palaces and churches, including the Palácio Nacional da Ajuda , the Palácio dos Duques de Palmela , the Igreja da Encarnação , the Igreja de São Domingos and the royal chapel in the Palácio da Bemposta . In 1771 he created the library in the Palácio Nacional de Mafra .
