Manuel de Araúcho

Manuel de Araúcho (born February 14, 1803 in Montevideo , † 1842 ibid) was a Uruguayan military and journalist and is an important representative of Gauchesque poetry .

Manuel de Araúcho served in 1810 under Juan Ramón González de Balcarce in a reconnaissance troop and participated in the fighting against Estanislao López , the federalist caudillo of Santa Fe . He was captured at the Battle of San Nicolás that same year. In 1826 he took part in the war against Brazil. In the same year Alvear commissioned him to equip Lavalleja's army . De Araúcho took part in 1827 as a captain in the battle of Ituzaingó against the imperial troops of the Marquis of Barbacena. In 1828 he worked in Buenos Aires for the newspaper El Liberal and wrote the first version of his Carta al proyectista del Banco (English: ~ letter to the architect of the National Bank building ). In 1830 he wrote the one-person piece Fillán, hijo de Dermidio ( Eng .: Fillán, Dermidio's son ). In 1834 he translated the US national anthem into Spanish for the El Universal newspaper . In 1835 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in the cavalry under Oribe . In Montevideo he published the miscell band Un paso en el Pindo that same year . In 1837 he translated La Tontine and other works by Alain-René Lesage into Spanish. In 1842 he applied for exemption from military service after fighting in the Corps of the Milicias de Extramuros . Shortly afterwards he died.
