Manuel do Nascimento
Francisco Manuel do Nascimento (pseudonym: Filinto Elísio , born December 21, 1734 in Lisbon , † February 25, 1819 in Paris ) was a Portuguese poet , religious and translator .
He was born in Lisbon and ordained a clergyman in 1754. Due to his liberal stance, he had to emigrate to Paris in 1778, where he died in 1819.
Do Nascimento was friends with the French writer Lamartine . His first poems were published in Paris between 1817 and 1819.
His complete works first appeared in Portugal between 1836 and 1840.
Odes and satires were among the main genres in his poetry. He also excelled as a translator for Wieland , La Fontaine and Chateaubriand . Overall, he is considered a pioneer of the Enlightenment in Portugal .
He was the last and most important representative of the Arcadian formalism in Portugal .
