The Manzù Fountain is a public fountain in the city of Augsburg . It consists of a fountain basin and a bronze figure by the Italian sculptor Giacomo Manzù . The 2.2 meter high sculpture depicts a young girl who has just got out of the bath. She has only loosely thrown a scarf or tunic on. The figure, also popularly known as the chamber maiden , stands in a basin with running water at the artist's request.

After being dismantled in 2011, the newly designed fountain was reopened at the end of August 2015.

history

In preparation for the 2000th anniversary of the city of Augsburg, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry decided to build a second fountain on Königsplatz (the older fountain is the Thormann fountain, built in 1880 ). Numerous Augsburg companies provided further financial aid. In total, the fountain cost 800,000 marks. The ceremonial unveiling took place on June 21, 1985.

At the place of the fountain was originally the Gögginger Tor , which in the 20th century gave way to the so-called “mushroom”, a round stone building that served both as a stop and as a meeting point. After its demolition in 1977, the city planned the construction of a new building that would be used as a kiosk. However, these plans were not implemented.

present

In mid-July 2011, the fountain was dismantled and stored as part of the Königsplatz renovation. In its place, the municipal utilities erected the so-called Manzù-Bogen, a provisional track connection between Fuggerstraße and Bürgermeister-Fischer-Straße. The curved track was finally dismantled in September 2013. The paved area was restored in September 2014, the fountain with statue has been reinstalled since August 2015, over a flowing water surface and with lighting from the bench behind it at night.
