The Manzelbrunnen is a figurative fountain in Szczecin . It is only partially preserved after being damaged in the Second World War .

The Manzel fountain was built in 1898 by the sculptor Ludwig Manzel (figures) and the architect Otto Rieth (fountain architecture ) on the town hall square in Szczecin.

description

In the center of the fountain was the allegorical female figure "Sedina", who embodies the city of Szczecin. Around 1900, Szczecin experienced a significant economic boom, particularly through maritime trade (opening of the free port in 1898). The fountain stood “as a symbol of the emerging city, so to speak”. The fountain also shows with the ship's bow , the sail and the anchor on which she leans with her right arm, further maritime symbols.

Authorship

The fountain was created in collaboration between Ludwig Manzel and Otto Rieth. Whereby Manzel worked on the figures and Rieth devoted himself to the architecture of the fountain.

History from World War II

The Manzel fountain with an anchor motif, 2007

During the Second World War , the figure of Sedina was melted down for copper extraction in 1942 . When Szczecin came to Poland after the Second World War , the fountain was restored with an anchor as a new focal point. Since 2004 there have been efforts to rebuild the Sedina. In October 2012, the city parliament of Szczecin approved the motion of a citizens' initiative to erect a Sedina figure again.

The monument was the inspiration for the Sedina Fountain in what is now Poland's Police , built after World War II and designed by Mieczysław Glib.
