The area extends from the Albany Center of Plant Endemism (literally: "Center of Plant Endemism Albany ") in the east of the Cape Province in South Africa through the Pondoland Center of Plant Endemism and the province of KwaZulu-Natal , the east side of Swaziland and in the south of Mozambique and to Mpumalanga . The Maputaland Center of Plant Endemism is bounded in the north by KwaZulu-Natal and in the south by Mozambique.
Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany is home to large areas of temperate forests with approximately 600 different tree species. This makes the region unique, as nowhere else in the world are so many different tree species bundled together. The famous bird of paradise flowers in the area are typical examples of the region's plant demism.

It is one of the African biodiversity hotspots .
