Maria Cristina Betancourt

María Cristina Betancourt Ramírez (born December 15, 1947 in Havana ) is a former Cuban discus thrower .

She won silver at the Central American and Caribbean Athletics Championships in 1969, 1971 and 1973, the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1970 and 1974 and at the Pan American Games in Cali in 1971 and in Mexico City in 1975 .

In 1976 she was seventh at the Montreal Olympics .

Further silver medals followed at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1978 and at the Pan American Games in San Juan in 1979 . At the Athletics World Cup in Montreal in 1979 , she was third, and at the Olympic Games in Moscow in 1980 she was eliminated from the qualification.

In 1981 she became Central America and Caribbean Champion, and in 1982 she won the Central American and Caribbean Games.

At the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas, she was stripped of her gold medal for doping .

She set her personal best of 66.54 m on February 13, 1981 in Havana .

In 1984 she ended her active career and became a coach. In 2004 she allowed the Cuban state to send her to Mexico as a sports development consultant and then retired.
