María Garisoain

María Julia Garísoain (* 22. July 1971 in Buenos Aires ) is a former Argentine lightweight - rower . She won two medals at world championships in lightweight single .

Athletic career

The 1.62 m tall María Garisoain competed at the 1996 Olympic Games together with Dolores Amaya in a double scull with no weight limit and was eliminated in the repechage . At the 1997 World Championships , she started in the lightweight single and finished sixth. At the 1998 World Championships in Cologne, the Swiss Pia Vogel won ahead of the French Bénédicte Dorfman-Luzuy , followed by María Garisoain who won the bronze medal. Garisoain also won bronze at the 1999 World Championships in St. Catharines ; Pia Vogel won again, the American Lisa Schlenker received silver .

Since the lightweight single is not an Olympic boat class, Garisoain switched to the lightweight double scull in 2000 . Together with Marisa Peguri , she reached the C-final at the Olympic regatta in Sydney and took 18th place overall. In 2001 María Garisoain competed again in the lightweight single and took third place at the Rowing World Cup in Vienna.

María Garisoain won three gold medals at the Pan American Games: in 1995 she won the lightweight singles, 1999 she won the lightweight singles and together with Marisa Peguri, Patricia Conte and Elina Urbano in the lightweight quadruple sculls .
