María Nsué Angüe

María Nsué Angüe (* 1945 or 1948 in Ebebiyín or Bidabidjam , Kié-Ntem , Spanish Guinea ; † January 18, 2017 in Malabo , Equatorial Guinea ) was an Equatorial Guinean writer and journalist .

Life

Youth and education

María Nsué Angüe was born in 1945 in a prison in the northeastern city of Ebebiyín in what was then the Spanish colony of Guinea (now Equatorial Guinea). Her parents, both members of the Fang , were imprisoned for their political views. Her father is said to have been a diplomat.

At the age of eight, she moved to Madrid with her two parents . Angüe completed her schooling there and first studied journalism at the Instituto Lope de Vega . During her studies, she discovered her passion for writing and began writing. She then worked briefly in Addis Ababa before moving back to her home country at the age of 21. Angüe first worked there for a radio station and later for the Ministry of Culture and Education.

Writing activity

In 1985 the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia published their work Ekomo . She was the first woman in Equatorial Guinea to publish a book. The work is about the life and death of a Fang man, told from the perspective of his wife. The work is mostly written in classical standard Spanish and has only a few Guineaisms . Ten years later it was also translated into French under the title “Ekomo au cœur de la forêt guinéenne”. In 2017 SIAL Ediciones (Madrid) published a second edition of Ekomo in the Spanish original.

Angüe also published various poems and short stories at the Centro Cultural Hispano-Guineano in Malabo.

María Nsué Angüe lived in Malabo and Madrid and worked as a journalist for Spanish and Equatorial Guinean newspapers.

Private

Angüe was a widow and mother of three children. She died on January 18, 2017 in La Paz de Sipopo Hospital (Malabo).
