Marathon (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marathon is the name of a trilogy of first-person shooters from the 1990s for the Apple Macintosh , produced by the US game developer Bungie Software .

description

When it was released in 1994, Marathon competed, among other things, with Doom (1993), which is considered to be trend-setting for the genre of first-person shooters. Compared to Doom , Marathon has better developed graphics with a comparably more powerful 3D engine , more complex controls, a multitude of multiplayer modes and, above all, a deep and multi-layered storyline that is continued through all three parts of the trilogy. Many fans of the trilogy see the storyline as the most important part of the game, because the protagonists (Leela, Tycho and Durandal, three artificial intelligences ) have been embellished extensively, show a lot of dry humor and the story is just as fantastic, confused and open as that of the film The Matrix .

development

At the end of 1994 the first part was published under the title Marathon , followed in 1995 by the second part Marathon 2: Durandal , which was also ported to the PC for the Windows platform, and finally in 1996 Marathon: Infinity (again only for the Mac).

Release of the source code and as freeware

In 2000, Bungie released the source code of Marathon 2 under the GPL license. A group of dedicated programmers developed the code over the years, and the Aleph One project was born .

In January 2005, Bungie finally released the complete trilogy as freeware , but in the form in which it was delivered: Without source code and binary, but with all the associated files ( level , graphics, sound) that were created when the Source codes were missing in 2000.
