Marcel Aubert (born April 9, 1884 in Paris ; † December 28, 1962 there ) was a French historian and art historian .

Life

After graduating from the Lycée Condorcet in Paris , he studied at the École nationale des chartes and completed it in 1907 with a thesis on the Cathedral of Senlis .

Aubert is considered to be a forerunner of art history teaching, also for broad readership in France. It was received in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s through translations of introductory works that have appeared on Romanesque and Gothic art. These books are also forerunners to the art travel guides that were gradually emerging for broad sections of the population and are still popular today.

Among other things, he was a professor at the École nationale des chartes and director of the Sociéte française d'archéologie .

In 1936, Aubert was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
