Marcel Rooney

Marcel Rooney OSB (born September 20, 1937 ) is a Benedictine and former Abbot Primate of the Benedictine order .

Life

Ronney entered the novitiate of the Benedictine Abbey Conception in the US state of Missouri at a young age and made his first profession there on September 12, 1958 . He was ordained a priest on September 21, 1963 . The Elective Chapter of the monks of his monastery elected him on 14 April 1993 Abbot of Conception Abbey, the abbatial blessing he received on May 10, 1993. After the early death of Abbot Primate Jerome Theisen was Abbot Marcel Rooney at the Abbots' Congress in Rome on 18 September 1996 elected to his successor as Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation . In 1998, in connection with the allegations against the Archbishop of Vienna, Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer, he carried out an extraordinary visit to the Göttweig Abbey in Austria .

Marcel Rooney resigned from the office of Abbot Primate on September 7, 2000 for health reasons.

He taught at the College of Saint Mary Magdalen (now Magdalen College of Liberal Arts) and taught at the Benedictine College of Sant'Anselmo in Rome. For Pope John Paul II, Pope Benedict XVI. and to the United States Bishops' Conference he served as an advisor on liturgical matters.
