The Abbey Conception (English Conception Abbey , actually Neu-Engelberg ) is a Benedictine monastery in Conception , Nodaway County , in the US state of Missouri . The abbey in the Diocese of Kansas City-Saint Joseph belongs to the Swiss-American Congregation .

The monastery was founded in 1873 by the Swiss Benedictine Abbey Engelberg and settled with monks. First declared a priory in 1876 , Conception was elevated to an abbey in 1881 . The first abbot was Father Frowin Conrad . In 1884 the Benedictines of Neu-Engelberg began the mission among the Sioux Indians. The Conception Seminary College, founded in 1874, is assigned to the monastery .

Several daughter monasteries were founded by Conception: 1945 in Benet Lake (Wisconsin), 1951 in Columbia (Missouri) and 1956 in Elkhorn (Nebraska).

In 2016 around 60 monks lived in the monastery.

The 9th Abbot of Conception, Gregory Polan , was elected Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Order on September 10, 2016 by the Abbots' Congress in Rome . The 8th abbot of the monastery, Marcel Rooney (1993–1996), was Abbot Primate of the Benedictines (1996–2000).

The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was designed by the Franciscan Adrian Wewer . The foundation stone was laid in 1883 and the church consecrated in 1891 . Two years later, a tornado destroyed the church. When it was rebuilt, the abbey church was decorated with wall paintings in the style of the Beuron art school . On August 7, 1940, Pope Pius XII. the church to the Basilica minor .

A major restoration costing nine million US dollars was completed in 1999 after two decades.
