Short biography

Frowin Conrad was born into a religious farming family of 15. He graduated from high school in Engelberg and entered 1852 in the monastery Engelberg one. After profession in 1853, he became a priest in 1856, like four of his brothers. After various offices in Engelberg Monastery, he headed the Engelberg parish from 1866 to 1873. In April 1873 he moved with his brother P. Adelhelm Odermatt to the USA, where the Conception (also called Neu-Engelberg) monastery was founded with great difficulty in Conception (Missouri). Monastery life and a seminar were built up from the simplest of beginnings. After being appointed prior in 1876, Father Frowin became the first abbot of the monastery in 1881. In the beginning he had the teaching of children particularly encouraged and also set up a model farm. Several monasteries, institutes and hospitals emerged from the development work. Father Frowin has received several awards for his work.
