Gregory Polan

Gregory J. Polan OSB (born January 2, 1950 in Berwyn , Illinois , United States ) is an American religious and since 2016 Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation .

Life

Gregory Polan is the son of Martha and Edward Polan. He joined in 1970 the Congregation of Benedictines in the Abbey Conception in Conception in the State of Missouri in the 1873 by the Swiss Engelberg monastery was founded. He made his profession on August 28, 1971 and his perpetual vows on August 31, 1974 . After his theological and philosophical training, he was ordained a priest in 1977 . On September 10, 2016, the approximately 250 Benedictine abbots and superiors gathered for the Abbots' Congress in Rome elected him as the tenth Abbot Primate and thus as the highest representative of the approximately 22,000 Benedictines worldwide for an initial term of eight years. He heads the primate abbey of Sant'Anselmo on the Aventine in Rome. At the same time he is Grand Chancellor of the papal college of the Benedictines, the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome. Gregory Polan is the successor to the German Notker Wolf and the fourth American in the office of Abbot Primate.

As a scientist, he became familiar with the subjects of Bible translation. Most recently he worked on the New American Bible , in particular on the Revised Grail Psalter . Polan is a talented musician; and has composed numerous songs.
