Jerome Theisen

Jerome Theisen OSB (born December 30, 1930 in Loyal ; † September 11, 1995 in Rome ) was a Benedictine and Abbot Primate of the Benedictine order.

Life

In 1951 he entered the novitiate of Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville , Minnesota , and made profession on July 11, 1952 . He studied at Saint John's until his bachelor's degree in philosophy and then went to study theology at the Pontifical Benedictine University of Sant'Anselmo in Rome. He was ordained a priest on July 28, 1957. On August 22, 1979, the convent chapter elected him Abbot of Saint John's. In September 1992 Abbot Jerome Theisen was elected Abbot Primate of the Benedictine Confederation at the Abbots' Congress.

He died of a heart attack in Rome on September 11, 1995 . On September 15, 1995, Cardinal Paul Augustin Mayer OSB held a memorial mass for him in Sant'Anselmo , and the deceased was then transferred to Collegeville in the USA, where he was buried on September 18, 1995 in the cemetery of St. John's Abbey.
