Marco Visconti di Parma (born November 1353 in Milan ; † January 3, 1382 ibid) from the Visconti family was co-ruler of Milan (1379-1382) and governor of Parma (1364-1382). He is not to be confused with his great-uncle Marco I. Visconti .

Life

The son of Bernabò Visconti and Beatrice della Scala , Marco was born in Milan in November 1353. Francesco Petrarca was chosen as his godfather , who advised the parents to honor Cicero's child in the name of Marco. The father was involved in numerous wars and extended his rule to several cities in northern Italy. So he subjugated Parma and installed Marco there in 1364 as governor. The wars against the Pope, the Emperor and various neighbors meant that Bernabò was looking for allies. For this reason Marco was supposed to marry the daughter of the Lord of Padua Francesco da Carrara . Marco's mother Beatrice was against it, however, because Carrara was waging a campaign against her family in Verona and advised her husband to wait for a better candidate. The engagement that had already been resolved was also dissolved because Carrara canceled the peace treaty with Milan. In 1367 Marco was finally married to Elisabeth von Bayern-Landshut , which brought the Visconti a dowry of around 45,000 guilders. In 1379, Bernabò divided his domain among his sons. As the firstborn, Marco was made co-ruler of Milan. However, three years before his father, Marco died on January 3, 1382 in Milan. His wife survived him by only two weeks; their marriage remained childless.
