Marcus Gerards the Elder (* around 1520/1521 in Bruges ; † after 1586 and before 1604) was a Flemish Renaissance painter , graphic artist and engraver .

Life

It is often speculated that Gerards the Elder was the artist who illustrated the fables of Aesop in 1567 . What is certain is that a year later he and his son Marcus Gerards the Younger fled the Netherlands to England, as other artists from this area of Europe would do, such as Gerard Horenbout , the reason for both artists was the religious persecution of the time after Dutch territory ruled by the Spanish crown. In England Gerards the Elder married his second wife. He lived in London, where he also taught his son the art of drawing. In 1577 Gerards the Elder returned to the Netherlands to continue his career there.

One of his daughters married the English miniature artist Isaak Oliver .

Today there is no painting by Gerads the Elder that can be clearly assigned to him, as he was in the habit of not adding his name to his drawings.

Marcus Gerards the Elder probably died in 1586, but later dates, such as 1604, are not excluded.
