Marcus I (Byzantium)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus I ( Greek : Markos ) († 211 ) was Bishop of Byzantion . His term is to the years 198 dated -211 and thus falls under the reign of the Emperor Septimius Severus . This had not only taken away the city's freedoms in the second year of the four emperors because of their opposition to him , but he also undertook long-term persecution of Christians. Therefore it is not clear whether Marcus was actually able to exercise the episcopate for the entire 13 years or whether he had to hand it over to a deputy because of the persecution.

He was succeeded by Philadelphus .
