Marcus Loane

Marcus Lawrence Loane KBE (born October 14, 1911 in Tasmania , † April 13, 2009 in Sydney ) was an Australian clergyman, bishop of the Anglican Church of Australia and author.

Loane studied at Sydney University and Moore Theological College . He was ordained a priest in 1935. He was then vice director from 1939 to 1953 and then from 1954 to 1959 director of Moore Theological College . During the Second World War Loane served from 1942 to 1944 in Papua New Guinea as a chaplain with the Australian troops.

In 1958 Loane received episcopal ordination . He was Archbishop of Sydney from 1966 to 1982, and Anglican Primate of Australia from 1978 to 1982 . Loane was the first Australian-born Archbishop of Sydney. In 1976 he was named Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire .

He died on April 13, 2009 at the age of 97 after a brief illness. Loane had been married since 1937 and had four children.
