from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus Pfister (born July 30, 1960 in Bern ) is a Swiss picture book author and illustrator .

After attending the Bern School of Applied Arts , Pfister completed an apprenticeship as a graphic designer for four years and then worked as such for an advertising agency, but from 1983 concentrated on a career as an artist in the field of sculpture and photography. In 1986 he published his first picture book The tired owl and made a name for himself with other animal figures such as the penguin Pit and the smooth backgrounds of his watercolor landscapes.

He achieved worldwide success from 1992 with The Rainbow Fish , published by NordSüd Verlag , about a fish with partly glittering scales in many different colors that does not want to share its scales with the other fish. Pfister then designed a few more books with the rainbow fish as the main character. The rainbow fish books have been translated into over 80 languages and have sold over 15 million copies. The American television broadcaster PBS produced the 26-part cartoon series The Rainbow Fish based on Pfister's story in 2000 .

Marcus Pfister lives with his family in Bern.
