Marcus Stlaccius Coranus

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marcus Stlaccius Coranus (full name form Marcus Stlaccius Cai filius Collina Coranus ) was a member of the Roman knighthood ( Eques ) living in the 1st century AD . Individual stations of his career are known through an inscription. His career is shown in the inscription in ascending order.

Coranus was initially Praefectus fabrum before he was accepted into the knighthood. Then he was a judge in the community (ex quinque decuriis) . This was followed by his military career, which consisted of the usual tres militiae for a member of the equestrian order . As prefect , he initially took over the management of the Cohors V Bracaraugustanorum , which was stationed in Germania . He then became a tribune in the Legio II Augusta . The conclusion formed the command as prefect of an Ala Hispanorum , which was stationed in the province of Britannia ; he was therefore either prefect of the Ala Hispanorum Vettonum or the Ala I Hispanorum Asturum . He also received military awards: the Corona muralis and the Hasta pura . Coranus probably went through his military career during the reign of Claudius (41–54) or Nero (54–68).

Coranus was registered in the Collina tribe . Possibly he came from Cora , today's Cori . The inscription was found in Rome, where Coranus had it placed on the family grave. The inscription lists the father of Coranus, Caius Stlaccius Capito , the two brothers Caius Stlaccius Cai filius Collina Capito and Lucius Stlaccius Cai filius Collina Fronto, and Coranus' wife, Claudia Secunda . It is possible that his father was a freedman as no tribes are given for him. It is not known whether there is a connection to Marcus Stlaccius Albinus Trebellius Sallustius , who is mentioned in an inscription from Ostia Antica .

Remarks

  1. The inscription reads : praef (ectus) equitum alae Hispanorum in Britannia . Margaret M. Roxan assigns Coranus to the Ala Hispanorum Vettonum . However, it indicates that he could also have been prefect of the Ala I Hispanorum Asturum , since both units were stationed in Britain. John EH Spaul assigns Coranus to the Ala I Hispanorum .
