Marea is a submarine cable used for transmission over the Internet between the United States and Europe . This transatlantic cable connects Virginia Beach in the US state of Virginia with Bilbao in Spain . Other European countries as well as the Middle East and the African continent are to be connected from Spain .

The clients Facebook Inc. and Microsoft want to increase their independence with their own submarine cable. The laying was carried out from August 2016 to October 2017. The reason for the construction of this submarine cable by Facebook and Microsoft was the impairment caused by Hurricane Sandy 2012.

Marea is the Spanish word for tide .

For laying the submarine cable, a route with an average depth of 3.6 kilometers was mapped, which partially runs through areas prone to volcanoes and earthquakes. The cable is around 6,600 kilometers long, and its diameter is roughly one and a half times the thickness of a garden hose. The cable contains eight pairs of fiberglass encased in copper, a protective layer and a waterproof sheath.

The transmission speed of 160 terabits / sec would enable the simultaneous transmission of 71 million HD videos. This makes it currently the most powerful transatlantic submarine cable. The maintenance of the cable is carried out by the Telefónica subsidiary Telxius , which is also responsible for the sale of free capacities of the cable. Marea went into operation at the beginning of 2018.
