Hermann Alexander Wilhelm von Wedel (born January 9, 1813 in Neuwedell , † February 28, 1894 in Kolberg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of the Königsberg fortress .

Life

origin

His parents were Gottlieb Johann Anton von Wedel (* June 12, 1783; † November 8, 1828) and his wife Marianne Karoline Luise, born von Münchow (* February 17, 1779; † May 29, 1851). His father was a lieutenant a. D. , last in the 7th Infantry Regiment .

Military career

Wedel received his education at the grammar school in Bromberg . On September 24, 1830, Fusilier joined the 21st Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army and was promoted to sergeant on January 9, 1831 . On January 14, 1832, he rose to the ranks of officers, was Portepeefähnrich and on January 15, 1833 Second Lieutenant . From July 1, 1836 to September 30, 1838 Wedel was the investigative officer of the Fusilier Battalion. He then worked as a teacher at the Division School of the 4th Division . On July 18, 1844, he was appointed adjutant of the II Battalion. During the Polish uprising of 1848 Wedel fought in battle near Wreschen . On September 16, 1848 he was promoted to prime lieutenant and on July 1, 1849 was promoted to regimental adjutant. During the mobilization of November 6, 1850, he was commanded as an adjutant to the mobile 8th Infantry Brigade and then returned to his post as regimental adjutant on February 4, 1851.

Wedel was promoted to captain on June 22, 1852 and was from March 1, 1853 to May 31, 1854 as a company commander with the III. Battalion of the 21st Landwehr Regiment. On June 28, 1854, he was a company commander in the 21st Infantry Regiment. In 1855 the army began experimenting with the minié rifle . Wedel took part in the shooting attempts from March 25 to May 1, 1855. On August 13, 1859, he was transferred to the 1st Battalion of the 21st Landwehr Regiment. On December 1, 1859, he left the battalion and was assigned to the War Ministry . He was there adviser for clothing and equipment for the infantry , but came back to the regiment on January 4, 1860. In the same year he became company commander in the 21st Combined Infantry Regiment on May 8, 1860, and a major in the 5th East Prussian Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1860 (No. 41) .

On October 14, 1862 Wedel was appointed commander of the Fusilier Battalion in the 2nd East Prussian Grenadier Regiment No. 3 . There he was on June 18, 1865 Lieutenant Colonel and from March 27, 1866 to May 9, 1866 again commanded to the Ministry of War. In the war against Austria in 1866, Wedel fought in the battles of Trautenau and Tobitschau and the Battle of Königgrätz . On September 29, 1866 he received the Order of the Crown III. Class with swords for his services. In addition, he was appointed commander of Infantry Regiment No. 78 in Emden on August 30, 1866 and promoted in this capacity to colonel on December 31, 1866 with a patent from October 30, 1866 .

On October 21, 1869 he was transferred to the 8th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 61 as commander. During the war against France in 1870/71 Wedel fought in the battles of Gravelotte and Villers as well as the sieges of Metz and Paris as well as the battles of Salins and Les Planches. For Gravelotte he received the Iron Cross II. Class and for the campaign on March 3, 1871, the Cross I Class. On March 31, 1871 Wedel was briefly assigned to lead the 8th Infantry Brigade. Wedel married Henriette Klothilde Marie Alexandrine von Gellhorn on March 30, 1853 in Stargard in Pomerania (* June 21, 1820, † December 2, 1857). The couple had the following children:

After the early death of his first wife, Wedel married Henriette Wilhelmine Elise von Besser (* February 16, 1834 - April 1, 1905), a daughter of District Administrator Otto Karl Kurt Hermann von Besser (1800–1878) in Konitz on June 28, 1860 . The couple had the following children:
