Margarete Adele Caroline Elisabeth Schuster (* May 21, 1899 in Oldenburg ; † February 9, 1978 in Hamburg ) was a German parish helper and pastor . She was one of the first women to work as a theologian in Hamburg, although she did not receive any pay or job that corresponded to her importance.

Live and act

Margarete Schuster's father was a high school professor who died early. Schuster completed a degree in theology, accompanied by financial problems. After taking the first theological exam at the University of Erlangen in 1925 , she passed the second exam at the University of Hamburg in 1930 . From 1926 she worked as a parish assistant at the St. Michaeliskirche . There she looked after young people, gave church services for children, worked in women's welfare and took on pastoral care for people who had left the church or for couples who were not married to the church, as well as for spouses who did not bring their offspring to be baptized. She also occasionally taught confirmation classes and held Bible studies in the ward. She also made contact with carers for families, single people and foster children. She took over visits to the authorities and looked after three “young girls' associations” in her community's youth work. In 1928 she also gave religious instruction in the first and second grades of the Wetken School.

In 1947 Schuster was given a new post as a pastor's assistant. The church council did not give her a free weekday. On July 1, 1950, she officially retired for health reasons, but continued to take care of community life after her retirement. In 1969 she was appointed "retired pastor", but no longer used the rights associated with it.
