The Portuguese- Sephardic Levano family came from Gymnich and has been living in Kommern since 1800. Since around 1900, the Levano grain merchant family had monopoly on grain and cattle feed in the Schleiden and Euskirchen districts . The Levano grain trade was able to maintain its monopoly until around 1935.

During the First World War , Eduard Levano was a state commissioner for grain, who had to organize the rationing of grain in Schleiden County.

After the so-called seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933, there was a smear campaign against the Jewish grain dealer. In 1936 he was forced to lease his company to " Aryans ". The forced sale of the company followed in mid-1937. The company was later renamed Kornhaus Kommern. Eduard Levano died suddenly on November 15, 1937.

For Eduard Levano, who was buried in 1937, a tombstone was placed in 2006 in the Jewish cemetery in Kommern . Five relatives of Eduard Levano were murdered by the National Socialists.
