Margaria Kalamen Test

The Margaria Kalamen test is considered to be the most reliable method for determining the anaerobic alactic capacity and the speed of the legs. Here, with a short run-up (usually three steps), a flight of stairs is sprinted up at maximum speed. In adults, the time between the 3rd and 9th step is measured with the help of light barriers or contact mats. The sprint is done in such a way that 3 steps (2 steps for children) are taken at once. The power development (in watts ) can be calculated from the time covered and the height of the steps . The test was originally developed by the Italian physiologist Rodolfo Margaria in 1966 and optimized by the American JL Kalamen in 1968 as part of his dissertation. The speed force per kg of body weight in children is similar to that in adults. After a practice phase, the test not only has a high level of validity and objectivity , but also reliability .
