Georgios Sotiriadis , also Georgios Soteriades ( Greek Γεώργιος Σωτηριάδης ; born April 25, 1852 in Sidirokastro ; † January 30, 1942 in Athens ) was a Greek philologist and classical archaeologist .

biography

Georgios Sotiriadis was the son of Sotirios Sotiriades and Eleni Primikiri. He was born on April 25, 1852 in Demirhisar, today's Sidirokastro, in northern Macedonia , which at that time still belonged to the Ottoman Empire . He studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Athens and the University of Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1887. In 1896 he became curator of the Athens Archaeological Society .

On April 26, 1901, he married the Greek-born Englishwoman Maria Mavrogordato in Athens. In 1912 he became a professor at the University of Athens. From 1918 to 1920 he was Vice President of the Athens Archaeological Society. In 1926 he became a professor and at the same time the first rector at the University of Thessaloniki . In the same year he also became a member of the newly founded Academy of Athens . Georgios Sotiriadis also taught at the universities of Odessa , Ioannina and Plovdiv .
