Margarites ( Greek Μαργαρίτες [ marɣaˈritɛs ] ( f. Pl. )) Is a traditional Cretan village in the municipality of Mylopotamos , Geropotamos district , which is known for its pottery . In the numerous potteries, a lot of mass-produced goods, even more individual pottery art, are produced. A little outside the village, a potter still makes the large, ancient clay pots ( pithoi ) according to the Minoan pattern.

Frescoes from 1392 in the Church of St. John

At least as interesting are the four or five Byzantine chapels, some with frescoes , and some old buildings in the narrow streets of the village. A particularly beautiful old Venetian mansion with an oil mill is located on the main street .

A narrow lane leads from the lower village square to a monastery that has been restored in recent years .
