Margins

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Margens is a residential area in the municipality of Moorweg in the joint municipality of Esens in the Wittmund district in Lower Saxony . During the Middle Ages there was a Vorwerk of the Marienkamp monastery in the place , which was possibly an independent monastery before it was incorporated into Marienkamp . The name of the place was first mentioned in 1438 as toe Merghense or by Marghenze and is derived from the nickname Marge or Maring (female form), to which the old Frisian collective suffix ingi was added.

history

The Margens farm is located on a large terp that was probably created before the dikes in the 12th century.

There are only indirect indications of the existence of an independent monastery. The residents of the surrounding villages had to do services on the area belonging to the farm even after the secularization . Another argument in favor of the monastery hypothesis is that stones in the size of a monastery were found during earthworks in the barn of today's Gulfhof . In addition, the area is marked with a monastery signature on a map by David Fabricius from 1589. One of those monasteries on the coast that Cornelius Ignatius Damen referred to in his Geschiedenis van de Benediktijnenkloosters in de provincie Groningen as poverty monasteries was possibly built there in the High Middle Ages , which were quickly abandoned after their foundation.

Margens then appears as the Vorwerk of the Marienkamp monastery. With this it came into the possession of the rulers of the Harlingerland after the Reformation and is now privately owned.
