Margie Evans (born Marjorie Ann Johnson ; born July 17, 1940 in Shreveport , Louisiana ) is an American blues and gospel singer.
Career
Margie Evans is from the southern states. In 1957 she married the preacher Jim Evans and moved to Los Angeles . She sang mainly gospel and church music until the 1960s , when she was introduced to the band leader Johnny Otis . He let her sing the blues classic Goin 'Down Slow and hired her as a blues singer for his band. The collaboration lasted four years until the beginning of the 1970s. She then made her own recordings and worked with Willie Dixon and Monk Higgins . With the recording of his song Good Feeling , she had a minor hit in the R&B charts in 1973 (number 55). Four years later she hit the R&B charts again with Good Thing Queen Part 1 (number 47). She worked with well-known musicians such as Donald Byrd (on his album Stepping into Tomorrow ), Roy Brown and Big Joe Turner .
In 1975 she performed at the Berlin Jazz Festival , where she met Horst Lippmann . With him she recorded her first albums in the early 1980s. She also toured Europe three times as part of the American Folk Blues Festival . In 1983 she received the Keepin 'the Blues Alive Award from the Blues Foundation for maintaining the blues tradition. In the following years she was also involved in promoting music and was among other things a co-founder of the Blues Society of Southern California . In the 80s and 90s she also continued to perform as a singer in North America and Europe. In addition, she also played smaller film and television roles to make a living.
In the late 1980s, Evans met the Swiss blues musician Philipp Fankhauser . When he recorded his debut album Blues for the Lady in 1989 , she was a guest singer. The connection remained over the years and at the age of 75 she gave three concerts with him in the Hunziken mill in Rubigen near Bern. Recordings of it were published on CD the following year and reached number 4 in the Swiss charts .
