Career

From 1994 to 2003 she acted as the directly elected Lord Mayor of the city of Hanau and temporarily as a member of the state executive committee of the CDU Hessen .
The Hessian Prime Minister Roland Koch (also CDU) described the urban development measures implemented in her own residential area in the course of the State Garden Show in Hanau in 2002 as the “event of the century for the city of Hanau”. The local politician also aroused regional media interest when she named the soccer player and later team boss of the national soccer team, Rudi Völler, an honorary citizen of Hanau after the vice world championship in 2002, which actually only the city council can do (§ 28 HGO in conjunction with § 51 HGO).
After accusations of personal gain in office and the use of public funds for private purposes, Härtel was voted out by a citizen's vote on May 11, 2003 with 89.5% of the votes cast. The following lawsuit against her was suspended after paying a fine. A counterclaim against the deselection of Margret Härtel was rejected by the Frankfurt am Main administrative court.
