The St. Mary's Basilica or Wanchin Church (Chinese:萬金聖母聖殿; Pinyin: Wanjin Shèngmǔ Shengdian ) is a Roman Catholic church in the community to Wanluan associated village Wanchin in Pingtung County ( Taiwan ). It belongs to the Kaohsiung diocese .

history

The parish in Wanchin was founded by the Dominican Order. The church was originally built in May 1863 as a simple mud building. On October 13, 1865, it was severely damaged by an earthquake. The reconstruction was enlarged with a facade in the style of a Spanish fortress as a hall church with two towers. The church was consecrated on December 8, 1870 after completion.

On December 9, 1984, the church was given the title of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II . It was the first church in Taiwan to receive this title. Furthermore, it has had the status of a National Shrine since 1985 . In 1991 the Dominican Residence of the Immaculate Conception was built on the church grounds. In 1994 a community center was also built there.

On August 3, 2016, the church was damaged when a man set fire to a wooden statue inside the building.
