The Dormition Cathedral ( Russian Успенский кафедральный собор ) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral in the city of Tula in Russia . It was built from 1898 to 1902. It is located near the Tula Kremlin in the former Uspensky monastery.

history

At the site of today's Assumption was in Cathedral 18th century , a monastery with a stone church built. From 1791 to 1792 this was replaced by a new church, which was finally demolished in 1898 for the construction of a larger Cathedral of the Assumption.

After around four years of construction, the new cathedral was completed on October 24, 1902. In 1909 the church building was painted inside and partly outside. These paintings were similar to those on the St. Vladimir Cathedral in Kiev .

In the 1930s the cathedral was closed by the Bolsheviks and the monastery was dissolved. They tried to destroy the cathedral, but failed. Finally, a branch of the city ​​archives was set up in the building , which existed until 2005.

In the late 1980s, the Dormition Cathedral was renovated. On September 8, 2006, the cathedral was reopened for worship .
