History and architecture

Entrance to the church

In 1756, the residents of Irig applied for a third Serbian Orthodox church to be built in their city. The district refused on the grounds that another church was not necessary. The then Metropolitan Pavle Nenadović then intervened with Empress Maria Theresa , which she accepted in the summer of 1757.

The church, built from 1757 to 1761, is a simple building in the typical style of the Serbian Baroque . It is single-nave, hemispherical and equipped with a semicircular apse in the east and a church tower in the west.

The exterior facades, divided on five sides, are simply designed with a horizontal low plinth, a single profiled eaves and low vertical pilasters . There are four arched windows each on the north and south facades. On the west side is the entrance with a niche for the patronage icon.

Iconostasis

The iconostasis is decorated with baroque and rococo carvings. The current icons of the iconostasis have been painted over, the oldest date from the 1770s. Four icons were painted in 1781, as was the icon of the Mother of God on the Throne of the Mother of God.

Because of the resemblance to the icons of the iconostasis of the Hopovo Monastery , the four icons of the Mother of God Throne are attributed to an unknown master who was based on the painting style of Teodor Kračun .

Frescoes

In 1827 the parish had the painter Georgije Bakalović designed the frescoes , as well as painting and marbling the interior of the church. In 1863 the frescoes were renewed by the artist Jovan Klajić . The current painting of the interior of the church dates from 1930 to 1932, when the frescoes were repainted according to the old model, with some changes and scenes from the life of Saint Sava of Serbia being added.
