Church of the Assumption of Mary

The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Polish Kościół Wniebowzęcia Najświetszej Maryi Panny ; historically St. Mary's Church ) is a Roman Catholic parish church in Chełmno (Kulm) in the Polish Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship . It was built around 1280/1320 as a Gothic hall church and is the main church in the city.

history

The construction that is preserved today was started around 1280 and consecrated in 1320. It had a previous building and was one of the largest churches in the Order of Prussia at that time.

The Chapel of the Holy Spirit was added in the 14th century, the Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in 1520 and the Corpus Christi Chapel around 1690.

The Marienkirche remained Catholic during the Reformation because the bishopric of Kulm fell to Poland during the Second Peace of Thorn on October 19, 1466. When the Diocese of Kulm was transformed into the Diocese of Pelplin in the year, Chełmno was transferred to the Diocese of Toruń .

From 2002 to 2012 extensive repair and restoration work took place.
