The Cathedral of the Names of the Virgin Mary ( Belarusian катэдральны касцёл імя Найсвяцейшай Марыі Панны ) is the episcopal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Minsk-Mahiljou in the Belarusian capital Minsk . It stands on today's Freiheitsplatz in the upper town.

history

The original baroque building was erected as a Jesuit church in 1710, during the Polish-Lithuanian era . During the Imperial Russian era, the church was expanded after a fire in 1797 and its elevation to the status of a cathedral in 1798, and the interior was refurbished in the Rococo style. Another redesign took place in the middle of the 19th century.

During the Soviet era, the cathedral was profaned in 1934 and its towers robbed. The facade was adapted to that of the neighboring houses. The church was named House of Physical Culture . Mezzanines were drawn in; the main room served as a sports hall.

After the end of the Soviet Union, the church was returned to the Catholic diocese in 1993. With Polish help, it was reconstructed inside and out and the facade with its towers was rebuilt. In 1997 the cathedral was consecrated again.

The Old Town Hall of Minsk , which was also reconstructed from 2002 to 2005, is in the immediate vicinity .
